” Pollock comes to life video 2011”
This video was made by streaming photographs of ink drawings and light drawings.
Utilizing a small click able light key chain, I set up a camera in my garage and took 30 second exposures of me making cool abstract drawings in the pitch dark!
For the drawings done in ink, I selected certain drawings I had done and cut out individual areas with a exacto knife. I stacked up the cut out pieces and began arranging them in compositions I thought worked. After photographing thousands of these arrangements, I edited all the images in Final Cut Pro to create a streaming video of the drawings. I called this ” pollock comes to life” as I felt this was a way of making abstract expressionism come to life in a moving form…Video!
I wanted to use modern technology to create a moving video capturing the energy of abstract expressionism. Influenced by the attitudes of Picasso, Basquiat, Pollock, my drawings have a energetic, controlled chaos like element in its drawing approach. It would feel unnatural if I didn’t mention music’s roll in all this. I create listening to music to get myself into a rhythmical trance, or at times heavily mediating on lyrics of artist like Bright Eyes. Listening to upbeat music is a great way for you to draw in a rhythmical manner, giving you energy to draw fast and explode with expression. -Ammon Rost
